The Golden Globes nominations have been released, and if you’ve noticed something missing, you’re not alone.
There are no women nominated for Best Director this year. This is certainly nothing new. As The Verge’s Kaitlyn Tiffany points out, “only three women have been nominated for Best Director in the last 20 years, and none have won.” (By the way, those three women are Sofia Coppola, Kathryn Bigelow, and Ava Duvernay.)
What makes this statistic more galling and disheartening is that it comes after a year of tumultuous changes in the way women’s voices are heard and considered, from the ongoing #MeToo revelations in Hollywood to the recent announcement by Minnesota Senator Al Franken that he would be resigning in the face of multiple sexual misconduct allegations.
It also comes after a year in which we saw Wonder Woman, helmed by Patty Jenkins, gross $821,763,408 on a global scale, grab a 92 percent Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and catapult actress Gal Gadot to being named IMDB’s most popular star of 2017 for her role in the film.

Wonder Woman wasn’t the only popular and critically acclaimed film of 2017. There’s also Dee Rees’ Mudbound (with a 97 percent Fresh rating) and Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird, which has been named Rotten Tomatoes’ best-reviewed film of all time.
As this Women and Hollywood post notes, it’s not as if women didn’t receive any nominations for Golden Globes, but it does seem significant that even being a box office or critical smash just isn’t enough.
Hollywood, you need to do better.
